In honor of National Cookie Month, I wanted to share my maw maw’s famous chocolate chip cookie recipe. Her cookies are a staple for every family gathering. If she ever shows up without cookies, she usually gets bombarded with inquiries as to what’s wrong, where are the cookies, etc…
Within the last year I have become more interested in family history. At the same time my maw maw’s health has been declining the last few years. With the passing of my uncle it only seems to be getting worse. As awful as it sounds, I could not let her cookie recipe be forgotten. I look forward to continuing the tradition of them being present at family gatherings as well as baking together with my children. I have fond memories of baking bread with my grandma. My hope is to gift my children and grandchildren with similar memories.
Maw Maw Hinson’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
12 oz. chocolate chips
1 tbls vanilla extract
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 sticks butter (my grandmother swears by Land O’lakes and uses nothing else!)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a medium sized bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix together eggs, vanilla, sugars, and butter. Gradually add flour mixture until all blended. Fold in chocolate chips.
I am sure this is not some ancient family recipe handed down for generations but this recipe with it’s taste and smells remind me of a happy childhood. (In the pictures note I had to use M&M’s in lieu of chocolate chips. I was out but they still taste delicious!)
